Assisted Living: Examining the Assisted Living Workgroup Final Report

On April 29, 2003, the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging held a hearing titled, Assisted Living: Examining the Assisted Living Workgroup Final Report.  Senator Larry Craig (R-ID), who chairs the Aging Committee, called the hearing to discuss a report issued by the Assisted Living Workgroup.

A coalition of stakeholders, all of whom were members of and participants in the Assisted Living Workgroup, released a separate report, Policy Principles for Assisted Living, to guide policymakers as they set appropriate assisted-living standards in the future. The coalition said the Workgroup’s final report fails to recommend adequate standards for the care provided to vulnerable assisted living residents.

Coalition members include: the Association of Health Facility Survey Agencies; the Center for Medicare Advocacy; the National Association for Regulatory Administration; the National Association of Local Long-Term Care Ombudsmen; the National Association of State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Programs; the National Citizens’ Coalition for Nursing Home Reform; the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare; the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants; and the National Senior Citizens Law Center.
